Plugins are one of the most important features of WordPress. A WordPress plugin is piece of software used to provide additional functionality to your existing WordPress Website. There are more than 30000 plugins in official WordPress plugin’s directory.
In this tutorial, we will see how you can install a new plugin on your existing WordPress website or blog.

There are two ways to install a install a WordPress plugin:
1. Automatic Installation
2. Manual Installation
Login to your Dashboard and select ‘Add New’ option from plugins menu on the left side of Dashboard (Plugins->Dashboard).
You will be redirected to a plugin installation screen like the one in the above image. On the installation page type the name or tag to search the plugin and hit the search ‘search plugin’ button.
Then, you will see a list of plugins similar to example shown below.
Select a plugin as per your requirement and click install. A popup will appear asking you for confirmation.
Press ok. WordPress will install the plugin and will display a success message. If any errors occur during installation it will output error messages.
After Successful installation, click ‘Activate Plugin’ link and you are done with the installation.
In some cases, the plugin you want install may not be available in the WordPress directory. Because, it may be a Premium plugin you have purchased or it is a custom made plugin. In such a situation, you need to install the plugin manually.
To do this, first download your plugin’s zip file to your desktop. Then, from dashboard select plugin->add new and select, the ‘upload’ option as shown in the screenshot below,
Now, from upload page, click on ‘choose file’ button, browse and upload the zip file.
After successful installation you will see a screen like one below. hit the activate button. Now, you have installed the plugin.
